Mokulele Airlines Receives Approval For Use Of iPads

EFB Replaces 15 Pounds Of Paper, Will Save 1,400 Gallons Of Fuel Per Year

Mokulele Airlines has received FAA approval for the use of iPads (Electronic Flight Bags) replacing paper on the flight deck. The use of i-Pads replaces logbooks, manuals, charts and also displays satellite weather.

The 1.5 pound iPad replaces about 15 pounds of paper on each of Mokulele’s Caravans saving an estimated 1,400 gallons of fuel per year. The FAA has granted Mokulele approval to be the first Hawaii based airline for use of iPads in all phases of flight. By using electronic charts and manuals, the safety and efficiency on the flight deck is significantly enhanced. This FAA approval culminates several months of training and compliance with FAA Advisory Circulars.

Established in 1994, Mokulele Flight Service was purchased by TransPac Aviation, Inc. last year. The airline offers more than 60 flights a day connecting Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and the Big Island with their fleet of 9 passenger turbine powered Cessna Grand Caravans. Mokulele recently commenced service between Kahului and Lanai. New service is planned between Honolulu and Kapalua starting July 1st.
