Piper Gets An Escort Away From Bush Ranch

Pilot Interviewed, Then "Sent On His Way"

A Texas pilot won't be charged, but could face FAA sanctions after he was intercepted flying too close to President Bush's ranch in Crawford, TX, Thursday.

"It was an accident on my part. I was not aware that the temporary flight restriction was that far out. Normally, T46 is, like, a 3-mile radius from the ranch," pilot Richard Ameen told KPRC-TV in Houston.

Ameen, flying a Piper Comanche, was en route to Weiser Airpark near Houston when he strayed inside the presidential TFR surrounding Crawford. Two F-16s circling the area promptly intercepted Ameen's PA-24 and escorted him Weiser.

After he was questioned by the Secret Service in a ritual that seems all too familiar these days, Ameen was released and authorities said no charges would be filed.

But the FAA may see things differently. Ameen's license could be suspended and he could face a fine, according to a spokesman for the FAA.
