SAFE'S Robert Wright -- Instituting Pilot Training Reform

Changing The Direction Of Current Flight Training Practices

As some of the most qualified and passionate practitioners of the flight training arts and sciences gather next week for what promises to be a watershed event in the aero-educational paradigm, we thought it was good time to present one of our more intriguing interviews with Bob Wright, a former FAA staffer and one of the most dedicated GA flight training reform advocates extant.

Bob and a number of other CFIs and aero-educators will be gathering in Atlanta for the first Pilot Training Reform Symposium... an event designed to discuss lack of growth, decreased student start, increased student attrition, and flat accident rate trends vis-à-vis our current flight training system. The Symposium will be held in Atlanta, GA on May 4-5, 2011.

Bob's compatriots have noted that, "Aviation educators perform the most vital and influential duties in aviation: they are the gateway for those entering aviation, be it for pleasure, business, commercial, airline, or even military flying.

Ground and flight instructors are responsible for advancing pilots through a regulated system of certificates and ratings, transitioning pilots to different aircraft and technologies, and ensuring that pilots satisfy FAA, insurance, and flight school or company recurrency requirements.

Though the reasons for increased attrition among students and other pilots are many, instructors often represent the first and last lines of defense to motivate pilots to continue in aviation. Instructors directly influence our safety, security, and environmental mindsets as well—influence that has significant and widespread ramifications both inside and outside general aviation."

Join ANN and Aero-TV for an enlightening discussion with one of the major figures in SAFE's attempt to reform and revolutionize one of the most critical factors in the rebirth of general aviation... the art and science of flight training.
