Piper Provides AirVenture 2007 Attendees Update On The PiperJet

Initial Wind Tunnel Testing Complete, Something New Waiting In The Wings...

Piper Aircraft held a Wednesday afternoon press conference, as the rain began to fall at EAA AirVenture 2007. Focus was on the PiperJet, with mention given to Piper's other models, and hints toward a new product to be unveiled later this year.

The PiperJet is well on its way to certification and production. Wind tunnel testing has been competed, and a few changes are in the works as a result. Among the changes, a 30 degree sweep has been incorporated into the horizontal stabilizer, along with a surface area increase of six square feet.

This was done to provide additional elevator authority, especially with a forward CG loading, and also for aesthetic purposes. Other changes include the addition of leading edge extensions at the wing/fuselage fairing, to smooth the airflow and lower the drag profile. Extra fuel capacity may be added in the new extensions. The engine nacelle diameter was reduced by 2", also to reduce drag.

Performance estimates remain as previously stated. Cruise is estimated at 360 knots at its 35,000 feet maximum operating altitude. Piper expects the Jet to cruise around 320 to 330 knots down at 25,000, which is probably where it will spend more time. Range will be 1,300 nautical miles with NBAA IFR reserves, making coast-to-coast travel possible with only one fuel stop. Cabin pressurization will be to 6.45 psi, resulting in a 5,500 foot cabin altitude at 25,000 feet, or 10,000 at 35,000.

According to Piper, wind tunnel tests suggest an impressive 17 to 1 glide ratio, due to its high aspect ratio wing. This lends a considerable element of safety to any single engine plane. Speaking of that single engine, Piper will go ahead with the previously announced Williams-Rolls FJ44-3AP. The powerplant, rated at 3000 pounds of thrust, will only put out about 2500 pounds initially, with an increase possible if flight testing deems it necessary.

Piper is hoping for mid-2010 type certification, with deliveries beginning late in 2010.

In other news, Piper announced it will unveil a new product at AOPA Expo 2008, to be held October 4-6 in Hartford, CT. No further details were offered. "We are a company on the rebound. We're re-polishing and resurrecting the brand," said Piper Vice President of Sales Bob Kromer (below.)

Kromer was asked if Piper has plans to enter the red-hot LSA market, as have so many of its competitors. Kromer replied with "It is not scheduled at this time. We built the original LSA, the Cub, but we're not planning on entering that market."
