Alaska Airlines, FAA Looking Into Takeoff On Wrong Runway

Pilots Not Disciplined... Yet

Alaska Airlines says it doesn't know why the pilots of one of its planes departed the wrong runway at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport... but it's gonna find out.

The FAA is also looking for answers as to why flight 61 -- a 737 with 63 passengers onboard -- was cleared to depart runway 34-Center at SeaTac Monday morning... and then took off from 34-Right. The crew even read back the clearance correctly... twice.

Tower personnel say they saw the error -- but since 34-Right was clear of other planes and vehicles, and is over 2,500 feet longer than 34-C, they didn't force the crew to abort.

Neither airline officials nor the feds have any idea what went wrong... and they wouldn't say when the crew found out about their error. But everyone says they're trying to find out how it happened, so it won't happen again.

Airline spokeswoman Amanda Tobin says the carrier hasn't sought action yet against the crew.
