Aerocomp's Jet Taking Shape

Everything takes longer than we'd like it to take, particularly a project that's as large, in both figurative and physical terms, as the giant Aerocomp Jet.

This big machine shows a remarkable promise; and the amount of work -- both building and in the design -- that is evident since last Sun 'n Fun is amazing, considering that it is, for now (as Aerocomp delivers hundreds of patrol vehicles overseas), very nearly a "sideline" project.

This year, the fuselage has sprouted empennage, impressive in its 17' span -- and too wide for the road. The solution for transporting it was to rotate the fuselage on the trailer, so that the horizontal surfaces were angled. This reduced the width of the rig to 14' -- barely narrow enough, even with a Wide Load permit, for the relatively short trip 2/3 across the state of Florida, from Aerocomp's home at Merritt Island, to Lakeland. Any more work on this machine will mean that its next appearance will be RTR -- runway-to-runway.

As one of the good people at Aerocomp told us, "We almost didn't make it through the toll booths!"
