Hampton Roads Exec Airport Celebrates Opening of New Executive Terminal

Even Better... Commencement of 5350' Runway Construction

The folks of Hampton Roads Executive Airport have a lot to be proud of this week... as they celebrate a huge step forward with a new terminal and runway in Chesapeake. Hampton Roads Executive Airport successfully unveiled its New Executive Terminal and commenced construction on a new 5,350 foot runway. The grand opening celebration and ribbon-cutting for the new runway, held on Friday, May 6, was highlighted by remarks from Chesapeake native U.S. Congressman Randy Forbes. Speakers also included Roger Oberndorf, Chairman of the Virginia Aviation Board, and Dr. Alan Wagner, a member of the Virginia Aviation Board. This event commemorated a long awaited goal of better serving the Hampton Roads community with new, first-class facilities for aviation needs.

After four years of terminal study and design, construction on the new $2,000,000 terminal facility was begun in the spring of 2010 with funding provided by the Department of Aviation of Virginia and the owners of the airport, Steven I. Fox and David A. Gibbs.

Equally important is the commencement of the construction of the new runway, an undertaking ten years in the making. With final approval from the Corps of Engineers, DEQ, DOAV and the FAA, it is anticipated that the new runway will be complete by summer 2013. Funding for the runway is being provided by the FAA, DOAV, Fox and Gibbs. Inclusive of land acquisition, environmental studies, design, and construction, the project will top $30,000,000 in investment.

Hampton Roads Executive Airport is a public use, privately owned reliever airport that is centrally located at the intersection of I-64, I-664, I-264 and Route 58. The airport is ranked #2 in the State of Virginia among 57 non-towered airports in annual operations (takeoffs and landings) and #3 for economic drivers among all VA general aviation airports.
