ANN Special Feature: NBAA, NATA, GAMA News Conference On Funding National Airspace 03.09.06
The Air Transport Association Tuesday announced the unified vision of its 19 member carriers for funding a next-generation air traffic control system as part of the FAA Airport and Airway Trust Fund (AATF) reauthorization.
The ATA says the airspace should continue to be paid for, in part, by general fund revenues. But it also calls for Congress to impose user fees. It suggests piston-powered aircraft owners and operators continue to pay fuel taxes... but also that each category of aircraft be assessed fees based on the amount it uses airspace resources. The ATA wants money generated by user fees to be segregated from other government revenue and dedicated only to aviation... without any additional direction from Congress. In all, there are ten points to this statement of principals... as backed by the 19 airlines that make up the ATA.
Also today... general aviation fired back with its own set of principles on how the national airspace should be funded. The leaders of GAMA... NATA and the NBAA held a news conference to outline their ideas on FAA reauthorization. Here's what they had to say.
