By Maria Morrison While various performers zoomed across the skies at AirVenture, the Phillips 66 Aerostars aerobatic team was taking an array of folks--including Miss United States and yours truly--around in circles both horizontal and vertical. I was in the #2 airplane with Paul “Rocket” Hornick, in formation off the wing of Gerry “Fossil” Molidor. Together, we flew for about 20 minutes as the pilots and aircraft showed off impressive formation aerobatics.

German Designed, Czech Built, Oklahoma Sold

Flight Design General Aviation GmbH, the German developer of popular Light Sport Aircraft such as the Super, F2, and F2e (electric), has announced the signing of a contract designating Airtime Aviation of Tulsa, Oklahoma a new North American distributor of Flight Design aircraft. The deal positions Airtime—a major seller of Light Sport aircraft in the United States and, by extension, the world—to capitalize on the growing popularity of Flight Design products. In all, the German airframer has in excess of 45 new aircraft orders on its books, and expects deliveries to commence at the rate of three-per-month by the fourth quarter of 2022.

Vertebral Fracture Attributed to Firm Landing

A Southwest Airlines flight attendant reportedly suffered a compression fracture to one of her thoracic vertebra during a hard landing at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) categorized the landing as firm, and asserts the other 141 individuals aboard the 18-year-old 737-700 went uninjured.

MQ-8C Fire Scout Demonstrates Expeditionary Capability

Northrop Grumman’s MQ-8C Fire Scout is an unmanned helicopter based on Bell’s 407—itself a derivative of the hugely successful 206L-4 LongRanger. The autonomous vehicle provides reconnaissance, situational awareness, aerial fire support, and precision targeting support for the ground, air, and sea forces of its primary user, the U.S. Navy. Recently, the MQ-8C supported an Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations (EABO) exercise off the California coast, during which the formidable UAV demonstrated its ability to transition from ship-to-shore in a maritime environment.

Engine Company Challenges Convention—And Seems To Be Winning

Viking—the Edgewater, Florida-based manufacturer of piston aircraft engines—has fashioned a seemingly humble business-model into a genuine, and genuinely American success story. Viking’s praxis is simple. The company buys new and gently-used, late-model Honda automotive engines, and converts them to aircraft powerplants. Conversion, however, is no simple feat. In point of fact, it’s a downright complex process comprising extensive modification of the engine’s cylinder heads, valve-train, cam chain, pistons, oil-system, crankshaft, exhaust manifold, and a great many other bits and bobs which, though critical, make for boring reading.

Long Live the Super Hornet!

The U.S. Navy has undertaken a Service Life Modification (SLM) program by which it seeks to extend the service life of its aging fleet of F/A-18E-F Super Hornets into the 2040s. Delays in the development and delivery of the F-35 Lightning II, and unplanned squadron transitions from the legacy Hornet to the F/A-18E-F have compelled the Navy to push its Super Hornets to the full extent of their six-thousand flight-hour design lifespans—about twenty-years in peacetime. Regrettably, the Super Hornet has never known peacetime, and the fleet—over 15-years of constant combat—has racked up flight hours more quickly than anticipated.

AD 2022-15-06 Prompted By High Electrical Resistance Within The Gust Suppression Sensor (GSS) Transorb Modules

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for all The Boeing Company Model 777 airplanes. This AD was prompted by high electrical resistance within the gust suppression sensor (GSS) transorb modules due to corrosion on the transorb module threads. This AD requires disconnecting the connectors and capping and stowing the wires that had been attached to the affected transorb modules. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products. This AD is effective August 18, 2022.

Aero Linx: The Army Aviation Medicine Association The Army Aviation Medicine Association is the subset of members of the SoUSAFS that are also members of the Aerospace Medical associatino (ASMA) and is a constituent organization of ASMA with separate Bylaws and governance IAW with the constitution and Bylaws of the Aerospace MEdical Association. The purposes of the Association are to represent the interests of the U.S. Army aviation medicine community within the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA), and to provide a forum in which members of AsMA who are affiliated with Army aviation may gather at the annual AsMA meeting.

Severe Icing The rate of ice accumulation is such that ice protection systems fail to remove the accumulation of ice, or ice accumulates in locations not normally prone to icing, such as areas aft of protected surfaces and any other areas identified by the manufacturer. Immediate exit from the condition is necessary.
