Impact Into Mountainous Terrain Takes Four Lives

A charter flight went down late last month after the pilot of the Beech Baron reported a fire shortly before the aircraft impacted in mountainous territory. The controller inquired as to the pilot's intentions... but no response was made as the radar returns indicated a fast descent before the aircraft disappeared and subsequently was reported down. Conditions were clear and eyewitness reports indicate the aircraft made a sharp turn before impact. Witnesses also made reports that seemed to indicate the possibility of some kind of power issues...

In a matter of months, such a sight will never be seen again... no matter how high you fly. Recently released pix of the International Space Station, docked with the space shuttle are being seen for the next to last time in history. The shuttle, the vehicle that helped build the complex during the last decade, is about to fly its last flight and this next-to-last flight has produced some exquisite, and somewhat heart-breaking imagery. Interestingly; the photos are the first taken of a shuttle docked to the station from the perspective of a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

Shakes Down Returning Soldiers for $2800

One expects their homecoming from military duty to be emotional, and a mostly upbeat experience... until the airline taking you home shakes you down for big bucks. According to a number of the soldiers returning home from duty in Afghanistan, Delta decided to assess over a dozen of the returning war-fighters $200 a pop for those carrying a Fourth bag... even though the soldiers insist that their military travel orders allow them to carry four bags for free. Delta, on the other hand, biting the hand that keeps them free, says that its policy only allows soldiers to travel with three bags free of charge.

Aviation Safety Resources Granted New Patent for 'TriChute' Safe Landing System

Aviation Safety Resources has been awarded patent No. 7934682 from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for its TriChute Safe Landing System. The new patent revises and updates the technology from a previous patent. The TriChute Safe Landing System is designed to equip GA aircraft with a pilot-controlled mechanism that lands passengers and aircraft safely in the event of an in-flight emergency. The technology activates a series of ballistic systems that separate the passenger compartment from the fuel-containing wings and deploys three parachutes that bring the passengers and wings down in separate, controlled level landings.

At All Times, Take-Off, Aborted Landing, Go-Around -- Whatever... FLY THE AIRPLANE!

A tragic NTSB prelim is giving us a few clues as to what caused the loss of four lives on the First of June -- a pilot in a rented Skyhawk encountered squirrelly winds, had problems with a landing, started going around and apparently lost control of the airplane at low altitude, with fatal results for all on board. I don't have to tell you all how unnecessary this was... Still, it is incredibly tragic...

Another Victim of These Tough Economic Times Succumbs

We keep hearing about how the economy is about to turn around any minute now... but in the mean-time, the aviation landscape is being littered with a terrifying body count... this time a major airframe parts fabrication plant.  Goodrich Corporation has  announced it will close its Marble Avenue landing gear facility in Cleveland, Ohio by the end of 2012 due to 'program volume decline and the lack of appropriate new work to cost-effectively fill available capacity.'

"Delta Air Lines today increased its free checked baggage allotment for U.S. Military traveling on orders in Economy Class to four checked bags. Delta's revised baggage policy also allows U.S. military personnel traveling on orders in First and Business Class to check up to five bags at no charge. This change also adds dependents traveling with active military on orders. Each bag may weigh up to 70 lbs. (32 kg) and measure up to 80 linear inches (203 cm), which offers added flexibility over the standard 50 lbs. and 62 linear inches (157 cm) allotment.
