Transportation fatalities in the United States decreased by 9.2
percent in 2009 from 2008, according to preliminary figures
released recently by the NTSB.
Phoenix East Aviation Claims First ADS-B Equipped Independent
Training Fleet
Daytona Beach-based Phoenix East Aviation (PEA) said Monday it
has installed ADS-B systems on its fleet of training aircraft. PEA
says by doing so, it has become the first independent flight
training academy in the U.S. to have such a system.
Becker Avionics has rolled out its newest Audio Control Unit
(ACU) ACU6101 Cabin Audio Control Panel. This new panel design is
based on the standard ACU6101 Cockpit Panel.
Helicopter completions company Metro Aviation has introduced
some enhancements to the EC145 air medical interior, including the
capability to now use the Ferno Model 28A1 litter assembly with
ground ambulances.

ANN has learned that the final balloon aloft in the
America’s Challenge distance race for gas balloons has landed
safely on the U.S./Canadian border. Albuquerque’s Barbara
Fricke and Peter Cuneo are the unofficial winners of the race,
having flown 1,350 miles (2,173 km) in approximately 57 hours and
30 minutes. The team landed on the east shore of the Detroit River
in Windsor, Ontario Canada. Gas balloon landings in urban areas are
very unusual, as the balloons usually land in rural and even remote
areas.

Obama Signed The NASA Authorization Act Of 2010 Monday
President Barack Obama signed the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration Authorization Act of 2010 into law on Monday, Oct.
11, 2010, setting spending levels for the space agency, and setting
the stage for greater commercial participation in space.
Following the signing, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden issued
the following statement:
"Earlier today, President Obama signed into law the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration Authorization Act of 2010. It
is important bipartisan legislation that charts a new course for
space exploration, science, technology development, and
aeronautics. We are grateful for the President's forward-thinking
plan and the hard work members of Congress put into this
"Avatar" Producer/Director and self-avowed "avid explorer" James
Cameron took flight aboard the Zero-G Experience on Saturday to
raise funds for the X Prize Foundation.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope continues to make significant
progress, successfully completing a series of sunshield vent tests
that validate the telescope's sunshield design.
The National Park Service says that on October 8, 2010, a
privately-owned Cessna 172 with two occupants left the Bryce Canyon
Airport for a pleasure flight over Mount Dutton before returning to
Page, Arizona.
