Friends of the Earth (FOE) published new research from the UK Tyndall Centre for Climate Change that claims that carbon dioxide reduction targets for the EU and UK will be impossible to meet if aviation grows at current rates. FOE wants the UK Government to immediately increase passenger fees, remove fuel tax exemptions and to pursue emissions charges with the EU.

US District Judge Ricardo Martinez did not reinstate 472 union ramp workers who were laid off from Alaska Airlines in Seattle. After arguments from both sides, he ultimately said that he did not have jurisdiction over the dispute but that the airline was within its rights to replace the workers with subcontractors.

NASA Announced Thursday that plans to send a new lander to Mars have been approved. The Phoenix lander is a stationary craft with a long arm designed to look for water, ice and possible indicators of life. The Phoenix mission should launch in August 2007, sending the scout to the icy ground of the far northern martian plains.
