Ultralight/Light Plane Safety Seminar!
There will be indoor aircraft displays, vendors, aviation
organizations, and some of the best speakers in the sport. And the
best thing is that is a FREE event!
The Illinois Ultralight Advisory Council (IUAC), the Illinois
Department of Transportation, Division of Aeronautics, and the
Federal Aviation Administration, Springfield FSDO, are presenting
the 23rd Annual IUAC Ultralight/Lightplane Safety Seminar on
Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, in Springfield, IL.
The Seminar will be held in the Illinois Building
& Auditorium on the Illinois State Fairgrounds. This building
will accommodate a 400-seat theatre and a 12,270 sq. ft. auditorium
for aircraft and vendor displays all under the same roof. The
seminar will cover a broad range of subjects including Sport Pilot,
Safety, Engine Carburetion, and Gliders. There will be ultralight,
engine manufacturer, and accessory displays representing
ultralight, sport, and recreational type aircraft.
Speakers:
Frank Beagle, Master of Ceremonies
Mr. Beagle is as well known in ultralight aviation circles as is
the two-stroke engine! Frank keeps the program going with his
entertaining and upbeat pace. Also responsible for getting all of
those great door prizes distributed!
Edmund Dorner, Ph.D.
Edmund Dorner is a professor of safety emeritus, a board certified
safety professional, and a retired professor of safety at Illinois
State University after 29 years. Dorner has been a private pilot
for 30 years, has an instrument rating with 1800 mishap free hours
and is an FAA safety counselor. His presentation is What is
Safety?
Judy Ruprecht
Judy
Ruprecht began flying gliders in 1972. Since then, she's logged a
total of over 1800 flight hours in gliders and motorgliders,
earning Commercial and CFI glider ratings, a private ASEL rating,
and Designated Examiner status in gliders. She served as President
of The Soaring Society of America in 1990 and '91, following
several years as the chairperson of the SSA Government Liaison
Committee. As part of our tradition of introducing different
aspects of sport flight to seminar attendees, Judy joins us to talk
about the joys of soaring in a glider.
Ron Wagner, EAA
Ron Wagner is the EAA Programs Marketing and Communication Manager.
An EAA member since 1967, he has held the ratings of Private Pilot
SEL & Glider since 1968. Having built and restored several air
aircraft as well as operating an FBO/Flight school & glider
operation, he has spent a rich career in aviation. His presentation
is Sport Pilot... What the Rule Means to YOU, the Ultralight
Pilot
Tom Olenik
Tom is
a second generation ultralight pilot and two-stroke engine expert.
He has been working on aviation two stroke engines since he was 13
years old! He started flying in a Rotec Rally Champ and since then
has obtained his Private Pilot's license. He currently supports and
sells Rotax, 2si, and HKS aircraft engines as well as a lot of

Tom is the president of his local EAA chapter and is active on the
ASTM standards committees for Light Sport Aircraft. Tom will be
talking about the Care of the Bing Carburetor.
