S-LSA Certified Aircraft Down, 2 Dead

One Of The First Known LSA Fatal Accidents

A recently certified S-LSA aircraft, N9164M, an Allegro 2000 (file photos, below), has gone down, resulting in the deaths of the instructor and student on board.

The aircraft reportedly hit trees before impacting, with a pronounced pitch-down attitude, in a cow pasture, near Hwy 211 and Old Lennon Road, in Supply, NC. Pronounced dead at the scene were Robert Swanson (62) of Southport and John Nesbit (51) of Carolina Beach. Swanson was a well-known CFI, while Nesbit was said to be a student and former morning TV Anchor for WFMY-TV in Greensboro, NC. Swanson was reportedly president of EAA Chapter 939 in South Port, NC, and was also a Young Eagles participant.

The plane, only a few weeks old and recently certified in the ASTM orchestrated and FAA-Approved S-LSA category, was based at nearby Brunswick County Airport.

The sheriff's office reported that the Allegro 2000 took off from the Brunswick County Airport Sunday morning and was reported missing shortly before 1700. Several planes participated in the search and the aircraft wreckage was spotted at approximately 1800.

The NTSB has said that that they will be investiogating the accident, one of the first to involve a certified S-LSA aircraft.
