Airport Tells QB He Can't Take Heisman With Him

Sorry, Sir... Your Award Can't Fly

After winning the Heisman Trophy this past weekend, Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith had some difficulty in bringing the presigious award home in Columbus, OH. Seems that airport security in New York wouldn't allow Smith to carry the trophy onto the plane.

Smith (right) took the incident in good humor, though, adding he would shipping the valuable award instead... which, perhaps, was a better solution, considering what happened the last time a Buckeye won the Heisman.

The year was 1995, and running back Eddie George planned to take his Heisman Trophy on the plane ride home, too. Unlike Smith, security allowed George's award on the plane... but first, it had to pass through an x-ray machine.

The statue lost a finger... and had another one bent from the encounter.

"We decided to have it shipped. That's much easier. How times have changed. Eddie carried it on the plane and put it in the seat next to him," Sports Information Director Steve Snapp told the Associated Press.
