Yuma Airport Authority Looks To Reroute GA Traffic South

Rolle Field Lies 10 Miles SW Of NYL

Recreational flying around Yuma, AZ may be moving south.

The Yuma Sun reports the Yuma County Airport Authority hopes to alleviate congestion at Yuma International Airport (NYL) by rerouting some general aviation traffic to Rolle Field (44A), about 10 nautical miles to the southwest.

Airport Director Craig Williams says the big airport doesn't need to shed all GA traffic, but is looking for a place to expand as traffic builds from about 42,000 operations in 2007, to a projected 57,000 in 2027.

Rolle Airport is owned by the US Bureau of Reclamation, which leases it to the airport authority. Williams says the long-term plan is to take over and expand the facility, which currently has a single, 2800-foot-long runway oriented 17/35. The strip is currently closed for repaving.

Officials around the City of San Luis, near Rolle, are excited at the potential economic boost an improved and busier GA airport could bring. The runway is expected to be back in operation in April.
