Russians Blame Pilot Error For Arctic Mishap

He May Have Been Snow-Blinded

The pilot of a Regional Airlines Antonov AN-24 may have been blinded by the brilliant sun shining on the tundra, according to a Russian official -- and that may have led to last week's mishap near the oil port of Varandei.

As ANN reported in real-time March 17th, the Antonov's wing scraped the tundra on short approach to the airport in Varandei. The aircraft then rolled into the ground, exploding in a fireball that killed 28 people. The other 24 people on board were hurt -- some critically -- but are expected to survive.

The head of the Russian federal aviation oversight agency, Alexander Neradko, said the crash was caused both by a lack of crew coordination and the brilliance of the white tundra, according to a report from the Associated Press. He said his remarks were based on an analysis of the aircraft's in-flight recorders.

Weather at the time of the accident was reported clear and very cold (-11F). Neradko said there were no apparently technical problems with the aircraft, based on information gleaned from the flight recorders.
