Holiday Bonuses Not Enough To Improve US Airways' On-Time Performance

$100 Incentive Fails To Spur Employees

An incentive program announced by US Airways in November, intended to motivate workers to improve the carrier's atrocious on-time and mishandled luggage ratings over the holiday season, failed to deliver the goods.

USA Today reports the carrier's "Holiday Hustle" program did not achieve its goals of hitting 60 percent on-time departures, and mishandling fewer than seven bags out of 1000. As ANN reported, the airline said it would pay its roughly 36,000 employees $50 bonuses for each goal achieved.

US Airways spokesman Phil Gee conceded this week the airline failed to hit either one, with a 58.5% on-time rating and 7.43 bags per 1,000 reported mishandled over November and December.

Mike Flores, president of the US Airways chapter of the Association of Flight Attendants, said he's not the least-bit surprised the carrier failed to hit its goals. He called the proposed $100 bonus an "insult" to employees, in light of the millions of dollars awarded to the airline's top executives.

Much of the carrier's workforce continues to work without new labor contracts, Flores added.
