Lancair’s New Spirit Of St. Louis Flies Again

The specially modified Lancair Columbia 300 that carried Erik Lindbergh across the Atlantic last spring has returned to Sun’n Fun – this year with a full compliment of seats.

The Lancair Company refitted the New Spirit of St. Louis with a complete, production Columbia interior and plans to use the aircraft for promotional purposes. Those purposes may include a tour, with Erik Lindbergh, of Lancair’s domestic network of Sales and Service Centers this summer.

“It’s amazing the attention and enthusiasm this aircraft generates,” said Lancair Vice President of Sales and Marketing Mark Cahill. “Land at a new field and people come running out to look it over and ask questions. Of course, they tend to be a little let down if Erik’s not at the controls.”

Lindbergh retraced his grandfather’s flights from San Diego all the way to Paris in the New Spirit of St. Louis to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the historic flights. The New Spirit completed the non-stop, Trans Atlantic leg of the journey in just over 17 hours, about half the time it took Charles Lindbergh to make the trip in 1927. Aside from the additional fuel capacity and stripped interior, the New Spirit of St. Louis is essentially a stock Lancair Columbia 300. Based in Bend, Oregon, The Lancair Company manufactures the Lancair Columbia line of certified, high performance, composite aircraft.
