Airborne 02.04.19: Flt School Goes Pipistrel, Navy Remembrance, Plane Thief

Also: Mars' Vera Rubin Ridge, Air Force Space Legend, 79th RQS Named Top Rescue Squadron, LGBT Av Community Jobs

California's San Bernardino International Airport (KSBD) has become the home of World Wide Wings flight school for commercial pilots.

And while World Wide Wings is new to San Bernardino, the school and its administration has more than 40 years of experience in training commercial pilots at its campus in Miami. 20 to 30 students are enrolled in the school’s various programs and the school expects to grow to 50 students by June and 150-plus by the end of the year. The school is utilizing a fleet of 15 Pipistrel ALPHA Trainers. To honor the life and legacy of a female pioneer in Naval aviation, the U.S. Navy conducted the first ever all-female flyover last weekend, in Maynardville, TN. Conventionally referred to as a “Missing Man Flyover,” the tribute was part of the funeral service for retired Navy Captain, Rosemary Mariner, who passed away on Jan. 24 following a long and brave fight with ovarian cancer. She was 65 years old. All of the aviators participating in the flyover were from squadrons based at NAS Oceana, flying F/A-18E/F “Super Hornets.” The urge to fly can be a powerful one...though not always for the right reasons. Zemarcius Scott of Texarkana, AR  wanted to go to Chicago to see a rapper Famous Dex in concert. For some reason, the 19-year-old music fan thought the best way to get to the show was to steal an airplane and fly it there. That’s despite the fact that he'd never flown an airplane before. Scott didn't try to steal a Piper Cub either, instead, he was discovered on July 4 at Texarkana Regional Airport in the cockpit of an American Eagle regional jet. He allegedly told authorities that he thought flying an airplane was no more complicated that pushing a few buttons and pulling levers. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
