First Flight: New DA52 From Diamond Aircraft

New Twin Designed To Carry Seven People

Diamond has flown its new DA52 seven-place twin for the first time. The DA52 is the newest airplane from Diamond Aircraft powered by two Austro Engine 180 hp turbo-diesel engines.

The maiden flight was performed by Diamond Chairman Christian Dries and Ingmar Mayerbuch, the Head of the company's Flight Test division.

Our DA52 is designed to carry up to seven people. The airplane lifted off at 1430 local time with a gross weight of just over 3,900 pounds. The take off roll was less than 1,000 feet without flaps in a five knot headwind. Landing gear was retracted and initial climb rate stabilized at 1,700 fpm. The new flagship of the Diamond fleet continued its climb to 12,000 ft in less than nine minutes at 120 kts (IAS). Cruising speed was gradually increased to 190 kts (TAS) which was the limit of the authorized envelope, but the company anticipates that it will eventually see a lot more. No abnormalities were reported during the one hour test flight.

“This is the best prototype aircraft I have ever made a maiden flight with and the performance exceeded all my expectations," said Christian Dries after the flight. "I’m very proud of my team headed by Managing Director Manfred Zipper who realized this program in less than six months.” (Images provided by Diamond Aircraft)
