GA Pilot Intercepted Over Bush No-Fly Zone

"I Figured These Guys Were Pretty Serious"

Larry Kuehn was flying along, minding his own business Saturday when all of a sudden, his sky was full of F-16s. The Pentagon says Kuehn, a 50-year aviation veteran, was intercepted by the warplanes for flying too close to the no-fly zone over Chanhassen (MN) during a visit by President Bush.

"Suddenly this F-16, I think it was, went down right across the front of my nose," Kuehn told local reporters. I thought 'my god, what a near miss that was. What's he doing here?' By the time I got on guard frequency, a second one came by throwing flares at me. So I figured these guys were pretty serious, you know."

Kuehn was diverted to an airport in Wisconsin before being allowed to return to his home base at the airport in Lake Elmo (MN). There's no indication yet what penalties he might face. A spokesman for the military said that will be up to the FAA and the Secret Service.
