China: North Korean Fighter Jet Had Mechanical Problem

Pilot Was Lost, Mistakenly Entered Chinese Airspace

It appears that the pilot of a North Korean aircraft which went down last week in China may not have been defecting after all. The official line is now that the airplane suffered a mechanical problem and its pilot got lost, entering Chinese airspace by mistake.

China's state news agency Xinhua said late last week that a probe by "relevant departments" found the plane has some kind of mechanical problem. Reuters reports that the news agency said the aircraft "lost its way (and) crashed after straying into China."

North Korea has reportedly officially apologized for the incident. The plane went down near the city of Fushun, hitting a hut when it crashed. Only the pilot was killed in the accident.

South Korea reported a the time that the pilot may have been defecting in his Russian-made MiG 21 when the airplane went down. China strongly supports North Korea, and provides its neighbor with assistance in the form of food and energy.
