Pilot Safe After F/A-18 Bailout Near Key West

Second Hornet Accident In Ten Days

An unidentified US Navy pilot is in good condition after he rescued Monday after ejecting from his F/A-18 Hornet near Naval Air Station Key West.

The pilot was immediately picked up by a US Coast Guard helicopter, said Lt. Cmdr. Chris O'Neil, a spokesman for the 7th Coast Guard District in Miami. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Hornet went down about five nautical miles south of Boca Chica in the Florida Keys, O'Neil added. The pilot was returning to NAS Key West following a training mission.

"He was happy to be picked up out of the water," said Navy spokesman Jim Brooks to the Associated Press.

Last October, another F/A-18 Hornet went down in the waters near Key West, Brooks said. Monday's accident was the second involving a Hornet in ten days, and the third within the past month.

As Aero-News reported, on January 28 the pilot of an F/A-18 bailed out safely following an aborted night landing attempted on the USS Ronald Reagan. A pilot lost his life January 18 when the F/A-18C he was flying went down during a practice bomb run near El Centro, CA.
