When Wings Collide: Long Delays At ORD

UAL Aircraft Touch Wings While Waiting To Depart

Two aircraft holding on O'Hare's "penalty box" collided Monday, their wings becoming entangled in an incident that injured no one -- but delayed the departures of both planes until the whole incident could be resolved.

It happened about 1515 CDT. UAL 682, bound for LaGuardia, had already been delayed by about an hour. It was on the tarmac next to UAL 618, headed for Washington, DC. Both were Airbus A300s (file photo of type, below).

Authorities said, when 618 was cleared to taxi, its wing brushed the wing of the New York-bound flight.

"We're taxiing along, and all of a sudden we hear a clunk," 618 passenger Kelly McClanahan told the Chicago Tribune. "We look out the window, and our wing was under their wing. It was like -- oh, boy, now that is exciting!"

Aboard Flight 682, passenger Brad Jones wasn't as thrilled.

"Well, things are going bad and just getting worse," he remembered thinking, according to the Tribune.

Passengers from both flights were put on other aircraft and eventually departed ORD for their respective destinations. The incident is being investigated.
