FAA Approves Avionica’s avWIFI Router System For Multiple Boeing Models

One-Terabyte Solid-State Router Approved For 737, 767, 777, DC-10, MD-10 And MD-11 Aircraft

The FAA has issued an STC (No. ST03967AT) to Miami, FL-based Avionica, an avionics data collection and data transmission manufacturer, for the installation of the lightweight avWIFI router system on Boeing’s 737, 767 and 777 aircraft models plus the DC-10, MD-10 and MD-11 aircraft models.

“The Federal Aviation Administration’s approval of our avWIFI router system allows air transport and business jet flight operators to retrieve real-time flight data over wireless high-speed Internet and network connections no matter how remote the airport. We have developed a robust and compact single router that functions as a secure on-board server with up to 1 Terabyte of solid-state drive capacity for file storage and management services,” said Raul Segredo, Avionica president and chief executive officer.

“The success of receiving our 18th Supplemental Type Certificate for the installation of the avWIFI exemplifies the exceptional creativity of Avionica’s engineering,” Segredo said.

The Wi-Fi system is intended to provide secure device-to-device connectivity in the cabin during all phases of flight. With its router capabilities avWIFI provides the necessary high-throughput capabilities to update in-flight entertainment systems, electronic flight bags, onboard maintenance terminals, such as Avionica’s RSU II OnBoard, and other Ethernet-enabled mass-storage systems.

In combination with Avionica’s avRDC quick access recorder (QAR), the equipment can support full ARINC 615-4 and 615A data loading capacity. The feature allows operators to streamline data loading processes by eliminating the need to reproduce, distribute and load countless floppy disks every month. Instead, loadable parts are distributed automatically and wirelessly to the aircraft at the push of a button.

The avRDC QAR is standard equipment on Gulfstream G650 aircraft. Avionica developed the platform when Gulfstream engineers required a solution to interface several aircraft data buses to the G650’s advanced aircraft health trend and monitoring unit (AHTMU). The avRDC converts multiple aircraft data buses to a single Ethernet communication bus compatible with the AHTMU.

Avionica’s latest QAR model is the lightweight miniQAR Mk III, which, similar to the avRDC, includes support for multiple aviation data buses as well as Ethernet. Both devices can be equipped with a 4G wireless module for automatic flight data transfer.
