SUCCESS!!! Dragon Capsule Docked At ISS

Mission Profile Calls For Hatch Opening Saturday

At just after 1100 EDT Friday morning, Dragon became the first commercial spacecraft to dock with the International Space Station. The crew of the ISS is scheduled to open the hatch of the Dragon Saturday, and begin transferring supplies from the spacecraft to the orbital outpost.

JSTARS Engine Flight Testing Completed

New JT8D Engines Enhance E-8C Performance

Northrop Grumman has completed flight testing of the E-8C JSTARS aircraft after repowering with Pratt & Whitney JT8D-219 turbofans. A total of 808 tests were completed, many of which were concurrent with other Joint STARS programs. The testing regimen originally had planned for 39 total flights, but was accomplished in just 32 flights.

Two major stories took place as we were putting the script to bed for Airborne 052512... namely the first flight of Boeing's 787 Dreamliner from the much discussed South Carolina production plant... as well as an amazing skydiving FIRST whereby an experienced Stuntman jumped form a helo at 2400' using a modified "Wingsuit" and LANDED on a specially prepared cardboard runway (used to cushion the impact) without opening a parachute -- pretty amazing. NTSB Issues Recommendations To FAA Regarding STC Installers

Ageny Should Offer Guidence On Compatibility Of Modifications

The NTSB has issued a set of reccomendations to the FAA concerning the installation of STC modifications on aircraft. In its recommendation letter, the board cites several examples of accidents in which the STC modifications were made on aircraft but no compatibility check was performed to be sure there was no conflict between the mods.

First South Carolina - Built 787 Makes Inaugural Flight

Aircraft’s Roll-Out Was Last Month

On Wednesday, Boeing’s 787 program marked another milestone with the first flight of the first 787 built in the company’s South Carolina facility. The airplane made a successful five-hour test flight flown by pilots Tim Berg and Randy Neville while more than 5,000 Boeing South Carolina employees watched a live broadcast of the aircraft’s departure from Charleston International Airport.

Solar Impulse Launches Transcontinental Flight

Airplane Powered Only By Solar Energy Will Eventually Attempt To Circle The Globe

The Solar Impulse aircraft developed by Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg departed Payerne, Switzerland Thursday morning with final destination Rabat, the capital of Morocco. The takeoff was reportedly delayed by a couple of hours by fog at Payerne airport, but by mid afternoon EDT Thursday, the Solar Impulse website reported that the "zero-fuel" aircraft had crossed the Pyrenees mountains at the Franco-Spanish border, and Andre was on his way to Madrid.

NASA and the X Prize Foundation of Playa Vista, CA, announced Thursday the Google Lunar X Prize is recognizing guidelines established by NASA to protect lunar historic sites and preserve ongoing and future science on the moon. The foundation will take the guidelines into account as it judges mobility plans submitted by 26 teams vying to be the first privately-funded entity to visit the moon.

Nearly Double The Number Of Expected Submissions Received

NASA's call to scientists and engineers to help plan a new strategy to explore Mars has resulted in almost double the amount of expected submissions with unique and bold ideas. About 400 concepts or abstracts were submitted to the Concepts and Approaches for Mars Exploration Workshop in Houston, which was organized to gather input for the reformulation of NASA's Mars Exploration Program.
