A Win For The S.A.F.E. Effort? NAFI Approves Member-Elected Board

We can't say that we didn't see this one coming, but the pivotal question is this... is it too little -- and too late? That said, ANN has learned that the National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI) will begin transitioning to a board that is comprised of at least 51 percent of directors elected by NAFI membership.

NASA Gets An Extra $900 Million

NASA has offered up details of its $18.69 billion budget for fiscal year 2010 to advance Earth science, complete the International Space Station, explore the solar system and conduct aeronautics research. The budget request represents an increase of $903.6 million, or 5 percent, above funding provided in the fiscal year 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act.

20,000 Staffers To Be Added

In a move that seems at odds with current US federal budget priorities, the Pentagon has announced it will add 20-thousand employees over the next five years. Of that total, 11-thousand will be conversions of outside contractors to federal civilian employees.

Starting out as an operator of Huey helicopters with a specialty in heli-logging, Northwest helicopters has made quite a name for itself via a unique specialty.

Proposal: The Administration proposes to terminate production of the C-17 airlift aircraft and fund an orderly shutdown of the production line because the number of C-17s now ordered will be sufficient to meet the Department of Defense's (DOD's) airlift needs.

Proposal: The Administration proposes to terminate the Air Force Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR-X) Helicopter Program because of problems with contracting, high costs, and questions about the need for an aircraft solely devoted to this purpose when multi-purpose aircraft are available.

Proposal: The Administration proposes to terminate the F-22 Raptor program after production of the planned 187 aircraft because the Department of Defense (DOD) has determined that 187 F-22s, together with other fighter aircraft including the new Joint Strike Fighter now in production, will be able to meet foreseeable threats.

Proposal: The Administration has decided not to fund the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Alternative Engine Program (AEP), because it is no longer needed as a hedge against the failure of the main Joint Strike Fighter engine program.

Proposal: The Administration is proposing to terminate the terrestrial-based, long-range radionavigation system (Loran-C) operated by the U.S. Coast Guard because it is obsolete technology. Accounting for inflation, this will achieve a savings of $36 million in 2010 and $190 million over five years.

Proposal: The Administration proposes to terminate the Multiple Kill Vehicle (MKV), which is a long-term research and development program designed to counter ballistic missile threats by using several "kill" vehicles launched from a single interceptor, or missile.

Proposal: The Administration proposes to terminate the Presidential Helicopter replacement (VH-71) program and to initiate a new Presidential Helicopter replacement program, and to properly develop options for a fiscal year 2011 follow-on program.

Proposal: The Administration proposes to terminate the Air Force's Transformational Satellite (TSAT) program because of significant cost increases and slips in schedule.
