Recovery Effort Resumes... In 115 Foot Water

The search for victims in Monday afternoon's mid-air collision over the Pacific off the California coast was called off late Tuesday. The US Coast Guard says the mission has been reclassified as a recovery effort, and underwater teams will attempt to locate the wreckage and bodies in water up to 115 feet deep off Long Beach.

ANN has suffered along with the dedicated crews at NASA-Wallops as weather disappointed one and all with some unsuccessful early launch attempts... but Tuesday was the charm. NASA's Wallops Flight Facility (on the east coast of Virginia) was the site of the successful launch at 1955 local time of an Air Force Minotaur 1 rocket carrying the Air Force Research Laboratory's TacSat-3 satellite and two secondary payloads.

The Air Transport Association is corroborating reports that passenger revenue fell 18 percent in April 2009 versus the same month in 2008 -- the sixth consecutive month in which passenger revenue has fallen from the prior year.

Boeing Assembles Forward Fuselage for First 747-8F

Boeing is promoting another significant milestone for the first 747-8 Freighter by completing assembly of the airplane’s forward fuselage. The 89-foot, 2-inch fuselage section, featuring the airplane’s signature upper deck, was moved from the final assembly installation tool for sealing and testing before beginning systems installation.

Judge Won't Let Mesa Profit From Its Past

US Bankruptcy Judge Lloyd King apparently was not impressed by all the nice things Mesa Air Group wanted to do for the former emplyees of Aloha Airlines. The Associated Press reports King ruled last week that Mesa cannot use the "Aloha" name on its Hawaiian "go!" subsidiary, even through a licensing deal with the former Aloha stockholder who now controls the bankrupt company's assets.

STEREO Spies First Major Activity of New Solar Cycle

NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft has spotted the first major activity of the new solar cycle. On May 5 STEREO-B observed a Type II radio burst and a bright, fast coronal mass ejection (CME) emanating from the far side of the sun.

Four More years: Alaska Airlines Pilots Approve Contract

Isn't it nice when we all get along? The pilots of Alaska Airlines have voted to approve a new four-year contract. Of the 95 percent of pilots who voted, 84 percent did so in favor of the agreement.
