NASA Prepares To Move Endeavour To Launch Pad

Will Serve As 'Lifeboat' If Needed On Hubble Mission

NASA is preparing to move space shuttle Endeavour from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Pad 39B.

The shuttle will begin its slow, 4.2-mile journey on Friday, April 17 at 12:01 am EDT and will take approximately seven hours.

Endeavour will be at Launch Pad 39B in the unlikely event a rescue mission is needed during Atlantis' May flight to upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope. After Atlantis is cleared to land, Endeavour will move to Launch Pad 39A in late May for its upcoming STS-127 mission to the International Space Station.

As ANN reported, NASA was forced to roll back Atlantis last October, after a system that transfers science data from the orbiting observatory to Earth malfunctioned in late September. Endeavour -- also in position then as a rescue ship -- was instead rolled to 39A, where the orbiter blasted off on the STS-126 mission on November 14.
