Mylar Balloon Forces Los Angeles Police Helo Landing

Not An Isolated Problem, Officer Says

A Los Angeles police helicopter made a "precautionary" landing Saturday after it hit a metallicized nylon balloon.

Los Angeles Police Sergeant Brent Kary said the helicopter was near 59th and Hoover streets in south Los Angeles around 11 pm when it hit the balloon, remnants of which were caught on the main rotor.

Because the balloon material is tough and lightweight, the material adhered to the blade after the rotor popped it, Kary said. Officers on the ground could hear the noise made by the adhered material, which prompted the pilot to make a precautionary landing to check things out.

After landing in a vacant lot, the balloon removed itself after the rotor came to a compete stop. Paramedics that were summoned as a precaution weren't needed, according to the Associated Press.

Kary said he could recall at least six similar incidents just during his own time with the LAPD.

No damage was reported to the helicopter.
