One Helicopter Escapee Recaptured In Greece

Second Fugitive Remains At Large

Greek authorities say they have recaptured 41-year-old Alket Rijai, who made a dramatic escape from a Greek prison in February using a helicopter.

It was the second time the Albanian prisoner had been plucked from prison by a helo. The first was in 2006.

Reuters reports that Greek authorities surprised Rijai while he was sleeping in a hideout north-east of Athens. He was reportedly heavily armed with a machine gun, grenades, and pistols, but was unable to bring any of the weapons to bear when he was captured. Three accomplices were also captured in the raid.

Rijai and another prisoner, Vassilis Paleokostas, escaped from prison when a helicopter dropped a rope ladder to the two men on prison grounds and carried them over the wall while guards watched. Paleokostas, a Greek national, remains at large.

Rijai had been serving a sentence on multiple counts of murder at robbery at the high-security Korydallos prison when he escaped. The helicopter pilot said he had been hijacked and forced to help in the escape.
