Overweight Flyers May Be Charged Nearly Double On Air France-KLM

Charges Would Apply To Those Unable To Fit Into A Single Seat

Obese passengers who are unable to fit into a single standard airline seat will be charged nearly double the normal fare on full Air France KLM flights, the airlines announce Tuesday.

The international news service AFP reports that those passengers will be required to pay an additional 75% tacked on to the original ticket price to assure there are two seats available next to each other, according to spokeswoman Monique Matze. She said the decision was taken for "safety" reasons. "We have to make sure that the backrest can move freely up and down and that all passengers are securely fastened with a safety belt," said Matze.

Passengers who cannot fit into a single seat have to stretch the seat belts over two adjacent seats. The calculation for the surcharge does not include taxes and airport fees, and passengers would receive a refund if the flight is not booked to capacity.

An average plane seat is about 17 inches wide. The new fee structure goes into effect February 1st for travel beginning April 1st.
