Sailboat On The Rocks Causes Delays At Logan Airport

Vessel Ran Aground At The End Of Runway 9/27

A sailboat which broke free of its mooring Monday morning drifted to a spot just off the end of Boston Logan Airport's runway 9/27 and ran aground, forcing airport officials to close the runway.

With all flights forced to use runway 4R for arrivals and departures, delays began to mount up, eventually reaching more than an hour, according to the online site NYC Aviation. The FAA said that some flights were grounded until at least 1400 EDT while crews worked to remove the boat.

Weather was blamed at least in part for breaking the 37-foot sloop from its mooring in Winthrop, which is about a half mile from the airport across Boston Harbor. There were reportedly strong, gusty winds and higher than normal tides in area overnight and into Monday morning.

Boston television station WBZ Crews eventually were able to drop the boat's mast, at which point it was no longer an obstruction to the runway. The boat remained stuck on the rocks.
