Taco Bell Airlifts 10,000 Tacos To Alaska

Spicy Goodwill Treat Makes Good On Cruel Hoax!

Unless they feature salmon, crab or cod, tacos are not exactly a staple in the Alaskan diet. Still, you can imagine then the excitement in Bethel, Alaska – a town of 6,200 residents, when flyers suddenly appeared announcing that a Taco Bell was soon to open in their remote hamlet. You can also imagine their disappointment when the flyers proved to be just a cruel joke.

That is until some executives at the Irvine, CA based fast food company learned of it and felt their pain. The LA Times reports the company then launched their own ‘Operation Alaska’ – an adventure more exciting than anything seen on Flying Wild Alaska or Ice Pilots. Much to the amazement of the residents of Bethel a helicopter skimmed snowcapped mountains as it airlifted a Taco Bell truck to the tiny town. And not just any truck; it was loaded with 950 pounds of seasoned beef, 500 pounds of sour cream, 300 pounds of tomatoes, 300 pounds of lettuce and 150 pounds of cheddar cheese --- in short, the makings of 10,000 of the chain’s recently introduced Doritos Locos tacos.

But the joy will soon be gone from Mudville … uh …  Bethel. Taco Bell officials say they have no plans to open a restaurant in the town. The nearest one is 400 miles away, in Anchorage. A long, cold trip by dog sled or snowmobile.

Even so, the stunt gained the company untold publicity and one lucky woman said it was her first taste of Taco Bell in twenty years!
