AeroSports Update: Pilot Proficiency Continues At AirVenture 2016

EAA Pilot Proficiency Center Offers Free Skill Improvement Programs During AirVenture

On Friday July 1, flight instructor Earl Downs will conclude his six-part AeroSports Update series regarding pilot proficiency and skills when flying into Wittman Regional Airport during EAA AirVenture. However, pilot proficiency continues to be a hot topic after you arrive at AirVenture because of EAA’s Pilot Proficiency Center.

Those attending EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016 can improve their current flying skills or learn new ones at the EAA Pilot Proficiency Center. EAA, and its industry partners, are bringing back the popular training venue to the enhanced EAA Four Corners. This new location demonstrates EAA’s commitment to pilot safety and proficiency by locating it at the forefront of AirVenture 2016.

The center is a skill-building resource and gathering area for those who want to develop their skills and network with other pilots. It will feature Tech Talks, Redbird flight simulators with IFR and VFR flight scenarios, and the opportunity to talk with certificated flight instructors about how to become safer and more proficient in many aspects of flying. The Pilot Proficiency Center will be open throughout the entire week of AirVenture. All programs in the facility are free with AirVenture admission.

“The EAA Pilot Proficiency Center adds extra value for those participating at AirVenture in 2016,” said Jack Pelton, EAA president and CEO. “We appreciate all the people and companies who have stepped forward to support this facility, because it enhances a major part of AirVenture – the opportunity to share knowledge and information that creates safer, more proficient aviators.”

Attendees will also be able to learn about how to get involved with the EAA IMC Club, which is dedicated to improving the skills of instrument-rated pilots. EAA IMC Club Programming information will be available in the Pilot Proficiency Center lobby.

One of the featured activities are the Tech Talks, which are daily forum-style presentations about different topics attendees can use to improve their flying skills, and includes such topics as crosswind landings, situational awareness, and radio communication. Campers can take advantage of Early Bird Tech Talks available on Tuesday through Thursday from 7-9 a.m. Buses are available from the campgrounds to the convention grounds starting at 6 a.m.

Redbird Flight Simulations is providing 12 LD simulators, as well as a full-motion MCX and Cross Wind trainer, all with over 30 scenarios. The Tech Talks and flight scenarios are all eligible for FAA WINGS credits. These credits are part of the FAA’s ongoing program that helps pilots gain expertise and proficiency in various areas of aircraft and flight operations. A complete schedule of Tech Talk sessions and a list of scenarios can be found online.

The EAA Pilot Proficiency Center is supported by Hartzell Propeller Inc., Jeppesen, Redbird Flight, AOPA, David Clark, Mindstar Aviation, PilotEdge, Plane & Pilot, NAFI, SAFE, and Pilot Workshops.
