NASA Wristbands Contaminated?

Law Of Unintended Consequences

It's not just a fashion statement, or an expression of your resolve. Your wristband can also be a flight risk. NASA issued an internal advisory Thursday banning "Return to Flight" and similar wristbands from many NASA work areas. The wristbands pose a silicone contamination risk to components.

The advisory states that silicone inhibits bonding, and is easily transferred. Even very small amounts can inhibit the bonding and construction of components. Solder joints and some coatings can fail if silicone works its way into the process. Electrical fabrication, inspection, and test areas are particularly sensitive to silicone contamination issues.

It's not just the "Return to Flight" wristbands. Similar products such as Lance Armstrong's "Livestrong" bracelets can pose the same risk.
