Airborne-Unmanned 12.02.20: Drone Certs, Drone Pilot Busted, Flirtey-Vault

The FAA published airworthiness criteria for the proposed certification of 10 different UAS as special class aircraft. This is a crucial step to enabling more complex drone operations beyond what is allowed under the small unmanned aircraft rule (Part 107), including package delivery. Director of Aircraft Certification Service Policy and Innovation. Dr. Michael C. Romanowski said, "The development of airworthy, durable, and reliable unmanned aircraft is a crucial step forward for this innovative sector..." The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Piper Aircraft, Inc., Model PA-34-220T airplanes. This AD was prompted by a report of damage to the rudder flight control cables and the emergency power supply (EPS) system wiring due to inadequate clearance from the EPS wiring harness. This AD requires inspecting the rudder flight control cables and the EPS wiring for damage, replacing damaged cables and wires if necessary, and re-routing the EPS wiring harness to ensure proper clearance between the EPS and the rudder flight control cables. The Rudder Pedal “Fell Forward” Which Prevented Any Effective Right Rudder Or Right Brake

On October 7, 2020, about 1550 central daylight time, an American Champion Aircraft model 7ECA, N790L, was substantially damaged when it was involved in a landing accident at the East Texas Regional Airport (GGG), Longview, Texas. The pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 flight. According to the pilot, the maintenance flight was to perform an engine break-in on a newly installed overhauled engine. He reported that the 2-hour flight was uneventful until landing.

AD 2020-24-12 Requires Replacement Of The Affected Fasteners

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Airbus SAS Model A350-941 airplanes. This AD was prompted by reports that certain central wing box (CWB) fasteners had rotated inside the fastener holes due to insufficient friction for the application. This AD requires replacement of the affected fasteners, as specified in a European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) AD, which is incorporated by reference. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products. This AD is effective January 5, 2021.
