RARA Refuses To Respond To ANN Questions

But He Has Responded To Some Email

A little over a week ago, ANN reported that a long-time participant in the Reno Air Races -- someone who almost always finished "in the money" -- had been summarily dismissed from this year's competition (ANN: "RARA Bans One Of Its Own" -- August 25, 2003).

The dispute apparently arose after a meeting between the local airport board and members of the RARA executive committee.

John Parker, 3-time champion, Thunder Mustang pilot, and president of his company (which he moved to Reno to be closer to the races), American Air Racing, leased a Glasair III to Lou Dobb of Tehachapi (CA). The aircraft (pictured) is also ineligible this year, due, RARA said, to the ban on its owner. Dobb, who is still 'eligible' to race, is left without an aircraft to race, and Parker (below) is out the cost of the lease.

ANN has attempted several times to contact Mr. Houghton. He has not responded directly to our inquiries; but he did respond to an ANN reader who is also a friend of Parker's. [That friend's identity is being held from public discussion.]

Mike Houghton replied to the e-mail interrogatory with this:

Many of the issues do impact the race business and could negatively impact the event this year. All is not solely as presented in the public forum and the Executive Committee has made their decision to protect the event although it has subjected us to some criticism. If the line as a tenant is blurred it has been John that has chosen to blur it.

I will address a couple of points:

1. Lou Dodd has an invitation to race.

2. The Sport Class registration list is full with 2 on the stand by list.

Thanks for your comments and there are two sides to every story and issues here that go beyond the public forum. The Executive Committee unanimously made the decision to not have John Parker participate this year. This decision was related to a number of issues that could impact the future of the Races and RARA.
