FAA Proposes New Class E Airspace In Hawaii

New Classification Would Affect areas around Kahului Airport On Maui

The FAA has published an NPRM establishing Class E airspace designated as surface areas at Kahului Airport, Kahului, HI, to accommodate new standard instrument approach procedures at Kahului Airport. The FAA says this action would enhance the safety and management of aircraft operations at PHOG on the island of Maui.

The FAA has determined this proposed regulation only involves an established body of technical regulations for which frequent and routine amendments are necessary to keep them operationally current.

As a result, this proposed regulation:

  • Is not considered a 'significant regulatory action'.
  • Is not a 'significant rule' under DOT Regulatory Policies and Procedures.
  • Does not warrant preparation of a regulatory evaluation as the anticipated impact is so minimal.

Since this is a routine matter that will only affect air traffic procedures and air navigation, it is certified this proposed rule, when promulgated, would not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities under the criteria of the Regulatory Flexibility Act.

This regulation is within the scope of that authority as it establishes additional controlled airspace at Kahului Airport, Kahului, HI. Comments must be received on or before March 7, 2011.
