Deputy Sheriff Jumps From Helo To Rescue Man Overboard

Thanks For The Help... Now, Back To Fishing

A deputy sheriff in Lake County, FL made a pretty impressive rescue Thursday morning, jumping from a helicopter over Lake Griffin to rescue a man who had fallen out of his fishing boat.

John Smith, 71, was clinging to the side of his boat about two miles from shore, as his wife called for help, the sheriff's office told the Orlando Sentinel. Rescuers couldn't see the boat from land, so the helo was dispatched to lend a hand.

The helicopter's copilot, Deputy Bruce Doyle, saw Smith struggling to stay afloat as they flew overhead. The deputy then jumped in the water, and swam over to help Smith back onto the boat.

Once safely back onto his boat, Smith reportedly refused any medical treatment -- and then got back to the task at hand, fishing.

The FAA registry lists three army-surplus Bell OH-58 helicopters (above) registered to the Lake County Sheriff's Department, as well as one Piper Super Cub.
