Avionics Technician Of The Year: Andy Scanlon

Columbia Air Services Worker Lauded By FAA

Columbia Air Services, says that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) in Portland, ME, has named Andy Scanlon of Columbia's Bar Harbor location the 2004 Avionics Technician of the Year. The Portland FSDO, which oversees aviation safety in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, cited the range of Scanlon's work with aircraft electronics including certifications, benchwork and installations, and his experience with highly complex and sophisticated military systems.

The Portland FSDO also praised Scanlon's initiative in going beyond the training required to become an avionics technician and completing extensive additional training and testing to earn his Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic Certification.

"This is not required to perform avionics repairs and installations, but he finds the more rounded education and experience to be valuable in better accomplishing his direct duties," the Portland FSDO said in its award statement. "We congratulate Andy for this selection and for an on-going job well done."

Scanlon, a resident of Ellsworth, ME, has seven years avionics experience and has worked at Columbia's Bar Harbor location for the past three years.

"Andy takes the responsibilities of the entire department on his capable shoulders and manages the workload with exceptional efficiency," said Columbia Air Services co-owner Art Maurice. "His professionalism and his dedication to the quality of service have earned him much-deserved praise from the aviation community." "Andy epitomizes the level of commitment to customer service, to integrity and to safety all of us at Columbia strive for every day," said Columbia co-owner Harry Holt. "We are truly proud he has achieved this industry recognition for his hard work."

The FAA's Flight Standards Division's mission is to manage and direct the region's air carrier and general aviation programs. The New England Region, Flight Standards Division includes the Regional Office, the Logan Flight Standards Field Office (FSFO) and four Flight Standards District Offices (FSDOs).
