Aircraft Departing Lakeland Makes Emergency Landing

Airplane Suffered Minor Damage, Pilot And Passenger OK

An airplane leaving the recent Fly-in in Lakeland, Florida Sunday morning experienced an engine failure and made an emergency landing on a dirt road in Hardee County on its way home to Fort Lauderdale.

Tampa television station WFTS reports that the pilot, 18-year-old Juan Ortega and his 15-year-old brother Andres were uninjured in the incident. Ortega reportedly was able to avoid power lines along Mel Smith Road, but clipped a fence on landing, which slightly damaged the airplane, which was identified as a Cessna 152.

The Ortegas live in Weston, Florida. The incident is under investigation.
