A Suffolk County, New York court granted a motion for an injunction that maintains access to the East Hampton Town Airport (JPX) in the latest change of the ongoing battle to maintain the location. The litigation was supported by local friends and industry bodies, opposed by the town of East Hampton itself as it seeks to extend a series of operational restrictions at the field. If the town has its way, flights into JPX will be much tougher for visitors and operators based out of the region, with the airport becoming a private field. NTSB, Viking, Urge Immediate Inspection of DHC-3 Empennage Assembly

Service Letter Published to Address Possible Issue with Pitch Control Assembly

The NTSB has issued an expected service letter regarding the De Havilland Canada DHC-3 after finding a possible cause in the course of investigation regarding the September Mutiny Bay Crash. The NTSB urgently recommends that operators conduct “an immediate one-time inspection of the horizontal stabilizer actuator lock ring in accordance with the instructions in the Viking Air Limited service letter and report their findings to the FAA and Transport Canada, respectively.

Students Race in 4-Leg, Timed Sim Race Throughout Central FL to Support Educational Programs

The Aerospace Center for Excellence will hold an unorthodox fundraising opportunity to bolster their year-round educational programs, holding a Youth Sim Race between teams drawn from its Central Florida Aerospace Academy program. The high school racers will compete in a 4 leg, timed race throughout Central Florida, competing to be awarded points based on the completion time of each leg. The race portion of the drive begins on November 29th, but from now until then teams will be racing to gain as many donations as they can - and the team with the highest ACE donation total will get access to the race route 24 hours before everyone else.

NTSB Prelim: Piper PA-46-310P

Flight Track Data Ended Near Area Of Heavy Precipitation And Moderate Turbulence

On September 13, 2022, about 1100 mountain standard time, a Piper PA46-310P airplane, N43605, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Seligman, Arizona. The student pilot and passenger were fatally injured. The airplane was operated by the student pilot as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. Flight track data revealed the airplane departed from Double Eagle II Airport, Albuquerque, New Mexico, earlier that morning and traveled west for about 1 hour 50 minutes before the flight track data ended near area of heavy precipitation and moderate turbulence.

“During the examination of the airplane wreckage, the clamp nut that attaches the top eye end and bearing assembly of the horizontal stabilizer actuator to the actuator barrel had unscrewed from the barrel. The examination also found that the circular wire lock ring, which was designed to prevent the clamp nut from unscrewing, was not present.
