FAA Makes Tower Closing Decision

Nearly 150 Contract Towers To Be Shuttered April 7

You knew it was coming, and here it is. The FAA has reached the decision that 149 federal contract towers will close beginning April 7 as part of the agency’s sequestration implementation plan. The agency has made the decision to keep 24 federal contract towers open that had been previously proposed for closure because doing so would have a negative impact on the national interest.

Canadian Accident Pilot Tested Positive For Marijuana

Pilot, One Passenger Fatally Injured In October, 2011 Accident

The pilot of a Cessna Caravan which went down in Canada's Northwest Territories (NWT) was impaired by marijuana use, according to a report from the Canadian Transportation Safety Board. The pilot and one passenger were fatally injured, and two other passengers survived with serious injuries.

FAA Issues SAIB For Ercoupe Elevator Controls

Problem Found During Restoration Of An Ercoupe 415-C

The FAA has issued a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin concerning elevator controls in Ercoupe 415 model airplanes. The FAA received a field report of a loose elevator horn on an Ercoupe 415-C during restoration of the airplane. Although the external appearance of the elevator was unremarkable, teardown of the elevator revealed the elevator horn attach bracket had only one secure fastener out of four.

NASA Begins New Season of Arctic Ice Science Flights

NASA's Operation IceBridge scientists have begun another season of research activity over Arctic ice sheets and sea ice with the first of a series of science flights from Greenland completed on Wednesday. A specially equipped P-3B research aircraft from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, VA, is operating out of airfields in Thule and Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, and Fairbanks, Alaska.

Unmanned Air System Takes First Flight At Sea

Aircraft Completed Four Fly-Bys Of The Ship Before Recovery

San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) launched a RQ-21A Small Tactical Unmanned Air System (STUAS) recently, for its first flight at sea. The STUAS completed four fly-bys around the ship before recovering with the STUAS Recovery System (SRS), a cable apparatus the aircraft latches to for recovery. The STUAS completed three months of land-based trial flights aboard Naval Air Warfare Center in China Lake, Calif., before launching from a San Antonio-class amphibious landing dock ship.

ROPS to Also Become Available To Other Manufacturers' Aircraft

American Airlines has decided to equip all of its A320 Family fleet with Airbus' innovative Runway Overrun Prevention System (ROPS) technology. This onboard cockpit technology, which Airbus has pioneered independently over several years, increases pilots' situational awareness during landing, reduces exposure to runway excursion risk, and if necessary, provides active protection.
