Memorandum Covers Training For All Mission Profiles

Excalibur Almaz Limited (EA), a commercial aerospace company based on the Isle of Man, British Isles, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with California-based XCOR Aerospace for suborbital flight services. The agreement signed in conjunction with the Royal Aeronautical Society's 3rd European Space Tourism Conference calls for XCOR to provide suborbital flight familiarization and training using its Lynx vehicle for Excalibur Almaz crews traveling on Earth orbit, circumlunar, and deep space missions.

A320 Eventually Landed Safely After Four Hours 'Careening Through The Sky'

A JetBlue A320 on a flight from Las Vegas to New York Tuesday reportedly lost two of its three hydraulic systems during the flight, which forced the pilot to circle an area south the Nevada city for four hours burning off enough fuel to make a safe landing. Passengers described the experience as the airplane "careening wildly through the sky" as it made steep turns and "lurched from side to side."

Nordic Aviation Capital Orders Twelve Bombardier CRJ1000 NextGen Aircraft

Regional Jets Will Be Leased To Garuda Indonesia

A wholly owned subsidiary of Nordic Aviation Capital A/S of Billund, Denmark has signed a firm purchase agreement for twelve CRJ1000 NextGen aircraft, according to a Wednesday news release from Bombardier. Nordic Aviation Capital has confirmed that the aircraft will be leased to Garuda Indonesia, Bombardier's previously announced launch customer for the CRJ1000 NextGen aircraft in the Asia-Pacific region.

CVW 11 Commander Reaches 1,000 Traps

Nimitz Commanding Officer Was In The Back Seat

The commander of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11 completed his 1,000th carrier arrested landing, or trap, aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) June 18. Capt. Greg Harris completed the trap in an F/A-18F Super Hornet assigned to the "Black Knights" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 154.

The NTSB on Tuesday issued a Safety Alert to warn pilots who use in-cockpit FIS-B and Satellite Weather display systems that the NEXRAD "age indicator" can be misleading. The actual NEXRAD data can be as much as 20 minutes older than the age indication on the display in the cockpit. If misinterpreted, this difference in time can present potentially serious safety hazards to aircraft operating in the vicinity of fast-moving and quickly developing weather systems. The Gamera II human-powered helicopter designed and built at the University of Maryland has set a new unofficial record for flight in such a vehicle. According to a story appearing in the online publication The Blaze, the quad-rotor aircraft stayed airborne in the Reckord Armory on the campus of the University of Maryland for 40 seconds, still short of the minute needed to claim the American Helicopter Society's $250,000 award.

Significant changes are on the horizon that will affect pilots flying instrument departures and arrivals, the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) reported today. Pilots unfamiliar with the changes could be faced with separation losses, pilot deviations and potentially tense moments in the cockpit. At the heart of the changes is a seemingly innocuous instruction, “Climb Via.” Following years of discussion, the new Climb Via instruction for standard instrument departures (SIDs) is scheduled to go live on Aug. 15, 2012.

Syrian Air Force Pilot Defects To Jordan

Landed In The Kingdom In His MiG-21 Fighter

A Syrian air force pilot is apparently seeking political asylum in the Kingdom of Jordan, having landed there after flying a training mission in a MiG-21 fighter. The Syrian news agency SANA reported early Thursday morning (ET) that the air force had lost contact with the pilot during his training mission. They identified the pilot as Col. Hassan Mirei al-Hamadeh.
