Trade Group President Says Airlines Are 'Competing In A Very Tough Environment'

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced an upgrading of its industry profit expectations to $6.9 billion (up from $4.0 billion projected in June). IATA emphasized that, despite the improvements, profitability at these levels is still exceptionally weak (1.2% net margin) considering the industry’s total revenues of $594 billion.

The last remaining steel steel structures that supported Boeing's Plant 2 for more than 75 years Boeing have been taken down, making room for site restoration, including development of five acres of wildlife habitat. Thorp T-18 Down In Michigan, Pilot Fatally Injured

Pilots Were Heading To Breakfast, Fog May Have Been A Factor

A Thorp T-18 flown by its owner went down on approach to Plainwell Municipal Airport (61D) in Michigan Friday morning. Witnesses said that the aircraft apparently impacted a Fed-Ex semi truck traveling on U.S. 131 just a short distance from the runway threshold. The pilot was fatally injured.

VX-31 Flies Harrier On Biofuel Blend For The First Time

Tests Performed At China Lake Included Hover Maneuvers

Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD), China Lake performed the first bio-fuel flight test in AV-8B Harrier #88, Sept. 21 over NAWCWD's land ranges in the upper Mojave Desert. After preliminary ground test events earlier in the week, the Harrier was flown by Maj. Gary "Mouth" Shill, a pilot from Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 31 at NAWCWD. According to Hal Bennett, project lead for the AV-8B bio fuel flight test program, the testing was flawless.

FAA Issues SAIB For HEFA, FT Jet Fuels

Biofuels Receive ASTM Nod For Use In Engines Certified For Jet A Or Jet A-1

The FAA has issued a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) advising aircraft operators, Fixed Base Operators (FBOs), FAA repair stations and FSDOs, and Foreign Civil Aviation Authorities, that jet fuel made from hydroprocessed fatty acid esters and fatty acids (HEFA) or Fischer Tropsch (FT) synthetic blending components that meets the requirements of ASTM International Standard D7566 is acceptable for use on aircraft and engines certificated for operation with D1655 Jet A or Jet A-1 jet fuel, provided that it is re-identified as D1655 fuel.

Officials have confirmed that two Americans were among 19 people who died in Sunday's crash of a Beech 1900D turboprop during a sightseeing flight just south of Katmandu in Nepal. The two, both women from Utah, were identified as 49-year-old Leuzi Cardoso and 40-year-old Heather Finch.

NTSB Says 'Incorrect Manufacturing' Caused American Airlines Decompression

Area Of Cracking And Rupture Not Seen During Previous Inspections

In the probable cause report released last week concerning the rapid decompression of an American Airlines B757 departing from Miami October 26, 2010, the NTSB says 'incorrect manufacturing' was the source of an 18x7 inch hole which opened up in the upper fuselage of the airplane. Fortunately, the 757 landed safely back at Miami, and no one was injured in the incident.
