Float Planes Collide On Takeoff Near Dillingham, AK

Both Pilots Survive, One With Serious Injuries

The NTSB is investigating a collision between two float planes departing from a pond near Dillingham, AK.

The accident occurred as the aircraft were taking of from Shannon's Pond about 350 miles southwest of Anchorage on Wednesday. NTSB investigator Larry Lewis told television station KTUU that one both pilots survived. One sustained what the NTSB described as major but non-life-threatening injuries, the other was only slightly injured. Neither pilot was immediately identified.

FAA information shows both aircraft were Piper PA-18 Cubs. The aircraft registered as N2FD was taxiing prior to takeoff, according to the FAA investigation, while N9699P was departing. The pilot of the aircraft still on the water sustained the lesser injuries. The departing aircraft (N9699P) is registered to Justin C. Rogers of Dillinghan, according to the FAA registration database, while N2FD is registered to James Woolingham, also of Dillingham.
