Explosion Kills Airport Worker In Philippines

What Was He Doing With A Hand Grenade?

A radar technician for the Philippines Air Transportation Office is dead, killed in a blast Saturday when the grenade he was fooling around with detonated.

Andres Caro II, chief of the Aviation Security Group, said there's no evidence at this point that terrorism, so prevalent in the southern Philippines, played a part in the explosion at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

Cesar Simeon was killed in the airport explosion.  Caro said he was either fiddling with or cleaning the grenade that ended his life. Airport operations weren't affected by the blast because Simeon's office is far from the sensitive radar equipment he operated.

The explosion blew a hole in the floor of Simeon's office, shattered windows and peppered the walls with shrapnel.
