F/A-18C Down: Gulf Of Mexico

Pilot Rescued, Hospitalized

A US Navy F/A-18C crashed into the sea Friday morning while on what the military calls a routine training mission. The pilot, whose name hasn't been released, was rescued by the US Coast Guard.

It happened around 0830 EDT Monday, 60 miles west of Key West, FL, according to a military spokesman. There was no immediate cause listed by the Navy.

The aircraft was from Strike Fighter Squadron 106 based in Virginia Beach, VA -- the "Gladiators." Key West is a routine training destination for that unit, according to a military spokesman.

The pilot was rescued by a USCG vessel, then transferred by helicopter to a hospital at NAS Key West. His condition wasn't immediately known.
